Arugula, also called Roquette, is a leafy vegetable, like lettuce and spinach. Native to the Mediterranean and Asia, Roquette is a member of the mustard family. Like other leaf crops, growing Arugula in cool weather is best. Roquette is a leafy vegetable with a peppery, spicy taste. It is most commonly used for salad greens, or cooked like spinach. It is also used it in soups, pastas and pestos.

Arugula or Roquette is easy to grow. It likes full sun, but will tolerate partial shade.  For best results, grow Arugula or Roquette, quickly during cool weather, in moist, fertile soil. It gets the name "Rocket" for its speedy growth under these conditions.  The soil should be rich, and drain well. Mix compost into the soil, prior to planting. Add fertilizer when planting.  Weed around plants frequently.  Plants thrive in cool weather. Plant crops for spring and fall. For a continuous harvest during this period, plant succession crops.  Arugula will withstand light frosts. Roquette is ready to harvest in 40 days. Pick young, tender leaves. Larger leaves get tough and bitter tasting. Leaves can also taste bitter in warmer weather. Eat fresh or cooked like spinach.

This delicious brussels sprout also sets those little-cabbage-like morsels very early - within 90-100 days, so you can pick them without wearing earmuffs. Brussels sprouts always seem to be the last project in our garden and I have many memories of chipping them out of the ice. Churchill grows about 2 feet tall with a nice medium-green color. Long Purple eggplant is first mentioned by B.K. Bliss and son of New York in 1870, years later in 1877 by Peter Henderson Seed Company.  Later mentioned by 1886 by D.M. Ferry

An Italian Heirloom.  Long Purple has a milder, more delicate flavor than regular eggplant. The Long Purple has just a few seeds and a thin skin that makes it easy to cook.

Long Purple grows 24"-30" in height.

Eggplants prefer rich, deep, loose soils with large amounts of organic material.

The eggplant, and its close relative the tomato, were considered poisonous for many years. It is a member of the Solanaceae family that includes a number of toxic weeds like Deadly Nightshade. Eventually the adventurous began to try eating eggplant and it even earned a reputation as an aphrodisiac.

But, it's only been in the last 100 years that eggplant has been widely accepted as a vegetable. The large-fruited varieties probably originated in India while the smaller eggplants are thought to have come from China.

Learning how to grow zucchini and other summer squashes in your garden is like buying an insurance policy for your garden. Once you have a couple of thriving squash plants, your garden will provide plenty of delicious, fresh food for your family. In fact, in terms of the amount of food produced per plant, summer squashes are impressive. There's a reason that the stereotype of vegetable gardeners who hand out zucchinis to everyone they know exists, after all. And once you know the basics of growing zucchini, you can be that gardener, too.

Collards are easily grown from seed. They do prefer a cooler growing temperatures. So it is best to plant them in early spring, as soon as the soil is workable.

They can be grown for a fall crop and seed should be planted in late July for an early fall crop.

This is a large yellow-orange round beefsteak that has a high Vitamin C content and less acid than most other varieties. Henry Maule Seed Company of Philadelphia.

The Jubilee – or Golden Jubilee – tomato is a long-time favorite that was selected an all-America winner during the war years of the 1940’s. Delicious. No garden is complete without Onions. Texas Early Grano is a wonderful heirloom variety with good old-fashioned taste. Released by the Texas Agricultural Experimental Station in 1944.

1933 began the Texas onion breeding program which was to produce the Mother "Grano 502" which was in the parentage of all SuperSweet onions such as Granex (Vidalia, Maui Maui and NoonDay) and the Texas 1015Y.

Texas early grano forms large globe shaped vidalia-type onions.  Fine eating quality, nicely uniform with a white flesh. Nice flavor that is not too pungent. Texas Early Grano is a short day variety, but works well as an indeterminate day variety of onion as well.

Slightly sweet mild, long white globes with stiff blue-green tops.  Looks like a long slim leek with a 3-4" white globe of onion flesh on the end.  A sweet and mild bulbing onion.  Excellent yields. Great for salads and garnishes. Perfect for stir fry dishes and other dishes that call for great onion flavor.

Onions start bulb formation when the day length is of the proper duration and different varieties of onions require different day lengths to initiate bulbing. In general, most common varieties fall into one of two classes, long-day (for northern latitudes) and short-day (for southern latitudes). For this reason, onion varieties that are grown in the South are not adaptable to the North and vice versa. Late plantings of the suggested varieties also result in small bulbs or lack of bulbing altogether in any location.

Seeds can be sown directly into garden when soil is warm or started in containers and transplanted when several inches tall.

Once you have a couple of thriving squash plants, your garden will provide plenty of delicious, fresh food for your family. In fact, in terms of the amount of food produced per plant, summer squashes are impressive. And once you know the basics of growing zucchini, you can be that gardener, too.
