Heirloom (Non GMO). Genovese Basil is an annual native to India, Africa, and Asia. One of the most popular herbs, it is now cultivated in all temperate climates throughout the world. Of all the basils to grow, and there are about 150 varieties, Genovese basil is one of the best because it yields 7 to 8 cuttings and makes the best pesto.  In Italy, it is considered a sign of love. When a woman puts out a pot of basil, it means she is ready to receive her suitor. In France, it is called herbe royale. In India, it is sacred, dedicated to Vishnu and Krishna.

Basil represents the essence of the summer garden. It is not hard to grow from seed, which germinates readily at temperatures between 75-85 degrees. Contrary to most cultivation information on basil, it does not mind slightly acid soil or partial shade. As a matter of fact, it will do best in an area protected from the wind and scorching midday sun. It likes rich, well-drained soil and will grow best in soil enhanced with well-composted manure. It hates cold and should be planted out only when night temperatures reach 50 to 55 degrees.

Growing chives - why? ..Chives are probably the easiest herbs to grow in the garden. I grow these on my kitchen window year round.

They can be added to just about any meal you would normally add onions to, and they're very good for you!

Chives are the smallest of the onion family and there are a fair few types to choose from.

You can eat every part of the chive plant. The edible flowers add colour to the salad bowl or other garnish, the grass-like leaves can be cut up and added to cooked potatoes, salads, sauces and even sandwiches, and the bulb can be used as a mild onion.

Although the flower stalk is edible, once the flower has been produced, there is very little taste or nutrients left in the stalk. Discard the flower stalks, and crumble the flower heads into your salad.

This heirloom is an annual herb that grows 12" to 18" tall with feathery fern like foliage similar to Fennel or Queen Anne's Lace.  Cumin has a unique flavor similar to Caraway but a little more pungent.  Cumin seeds can be used whole, roasted, fried in oil to release their aroma; or ground into a powder.
Cumin is a popular spice in many cuisines of the world, including Mexican, Middle Eastern, Eastern European and Mediterranean.  It's used to flavor chutneys and pickles, and is a key ingredient in Curry powder.  Whether it's used in an Indian Curry or a Tex-Mex Chili, Cumin can be an essential addition to spice up your dinner table.
Cumin is said to be a diuretic and a sedative.  Cumin is known for it's medicinal properties including being a help with indigestion, nausea, morning sickness, flatulence, piles, boils, and breathing problems such as asthma and bronchitis.  There are some studies that are in their early stages that show cumin seeds may have anti-carcinogenic properties.  The most common way to use cumin medicinally is to make a tea by boiling the seed so that they will impart their oils and flavor into the water.
Folklore says Cumin can keep lovers and chickens from straying.  But the best way to keep anything from straying is to give it a pleasant homelife.
When we first started growing Cumin we had concerns our summers wouldn't be long enough, because everyone seems to say that Cumin requires a long growing season.  They are native to warm regions of the world.  It is recommended to allow 110 days until maturity.  In Southern Missouri our plants mature much more quickly than that, usually around 80 days, but we have very hot summers.  We don't start them early indoors, we direct sow once it gets hot out.  Like most herbs, plant in an area with good drainage. Harvest the seeds when they are ripe.  You can harvest the seeds individually, drying them as you would any herb seed.

Their delicate flavor lends them to inclusion in many dishes, both fancy and simple. The leaves can be grated or slivered raw into salads, diced or sliced for inclusion in soups, casseroles, and stir-fries. The tender stems and leaves can also be used in soups or included with other wild and garden offerings for a mixed sauté of greens and onions.

Seeds can be sown directly into garden when soil is warm or started in containers and transplanted when several inches tall.

Forence fennel, a wonderfully ornamental vegetable, is grown for its swollen leaf bases or ‘bulbs’ and edible leaves. When using in salads, the flavour can be improved by slicing the bulb and putting it in a bowl of water and ice cubes in the fridge for an hour. Steam, grill or boil the ‘bulbs’ and serve with cheese sauce or butter; infuse the leaves in vinegar or add as garnish to salad. Delicious. Florence is a wonderful heirloom variety with good old-fashioned taste.

Their delicate flavor lends them to inclusion in many dishes, both fancy and simple. They can be grated or slivered raw into salads, diced or sliced for inclusion in soups, casseroles, and stir-fries. The tender stems and leaves can also be used in soups or included with other wild and garden offerings for a mixed sauté of greens and onions. The whole bulbs can also be split in half or quarters, depending on the size, and steamed, braised, or even lightly broiled. They make a tasty and elegant side dish, which can be dressed up with a light mustard or hollandaise sauce, if you must.

Those people who live in the cool coastal fog belt can grow and enjoy fresh fennel all year, while those in the snowy mountains will have to content themselves with a spring and fall crop. Those of you that live in the hot summer zones of Northern CA and restrict your gardening to summer time will miss out on this lovely delicacy.

Seeds can be sown directly into garden when soil is warm or started in containers and transplanted when several inches tall.

In the culinary arts, Caraway seeds are a spice made from the dried fruit of a plant known as Carum carvi. A member of the parsley family, caraway seeds are not technically seeds, but fruits. Nevertheless, they are commonly referred to as caraway seeds in the culinary arts.

Caraway seeds are similar in flavor to aniseed.

Caraway seeds are frequently used in baking. The seeds found in most types of rye bread are caraway seeds. Caraway seed is also used in flavoring curries, sausages and even liqueurs. Caraway seeds are sometimes used in pickling and brining.

The leaves of the caraway plant can be used as an herb, much like its relative, parsley. In addition, the root of the caraway plant can be eaten — it's similar to a parsnip.

Delicious. No garden is complete without Parsley. Moss Curled is a wonderful heirloom variety with good old-fashioned taste.

HEIRLOOM. A fast-growing, peppery-sweet parsley that performs well in any garden. Moss Curled parsley is an herb you can always depend on. Because of its cold hardiness, it is available to harvest much of the year — even in the coldest of climates. Milder flavor than flat-leafed types. Remember, parsley is not just a garnish! It is a very nutritious herb (vitamins A, B, C), does a great job of blending food flavors, and freshens your breath!

Seeds can be sown directly into garden when soil is warm or started in containers and transplanted when several inches tall.  I grow this year round and keep it in my window in my kitchen for fresh cuts.
